It's not the solution I was hoping for but I put the first scene of my WIP up on a livejournal page.
Comments welcome. It's probably the slowest beginning I've done but I tend to rush things. My theory is that I do this because writing is so very much slower than reading.

They got editors to take care of the slimming down.
The weirdest openings and also the most entertaining were done by steven brust in his Vladimir, assassins, and Jhereg series.
Each book would often have its own unique and distinct plot line, that isn't mirrored by the others. One would do the flashback into the past and then merge with the present, thing. Another favorite of mine was one of the last, where every introduction to a chapter was opened up with this restaurant scene of Vlad eating some very well described food.
I got an initial psychological profile of the characters due to their focus on being well armed and independent of sorts in the woods.
That sonic boom wouldn't be that ship you were talking about, would it? ; )
So many of his chapters read like short stories. With one of those poetic endings that would be one of those cliffhangers from Wheel of Time ,for example.
