Didn't do the typing after all

Well, I did a good chunk of the typing. But I didn't finish. It just got too boring.

But I'm not completely hopeless because I finished 3/4 of a 3800 word story instead. It is so much more interesting to be writing something new and it kept me up until 1:30. I really like this one and I think it turned out pretty well. I'd started it *ages* ago but could never figure out how to accomplish a necessary thing. How does someone figure out that their world isn't real?

So I've got that up on the slush conference for Baen Universe as "The Storyteller" and I'm going nuts waiting for any sort of feedback on it.

Did you try having the guy use deductive logic in order to discover inconsistencies in events and people?

It seems like the basic question of how do you tell fake from the genuine article. If the object is the world, then the variables are more numerous, but the principle should still be the same as if you had two objects.

The simpler ways to do it from the examples I've seen other authors use is the creation of an alternative Sense or Authority. Thus the character has trust in the Sense or the Authority not to lead him astray, given that either of the two can inherently see deeper or through illusions.

This is similar to a sort of out of body experience or when a person is kicked out of this universe so that he can look in from outside, in order to see what no one else could. Perspective changes could be external or internal I suppose, or they could come from someone else using an external/internal superior sensing process. All this depends upon the reliability of a person's thinking though, for if the character cannot trust his thinking then what can he trust or base his beliefs upon.

Assuming there is a reality and a non-reality, there should be some kind of action or thought that would create a different reaction in reality compared to non-reality. If a person could figure out the difference with his mind, he could then observe the seams or cracks.

This was people living in virtual reality... sort of a Matrix sort of thing but not so extensive.

The characters realized that no one ever moved away. And they went for a walk on the road out of town but couldn't get anywhere. And a personality in the computer that made their world and ran things simply *talked* to them.

It's Not Projection

Take the case of "fascism". When you can see clear as day that the person who is accusing you of fascism is a fascist, they aren't projecting. They're talking about something ELSE. Basically, in the case of fascism, the basic set of fascist government controls are the default assumption of reality for a whole lot of people. The government is supposed to control every part of your life. The government is supposed to make you moral and good and reflect "justice". The government is supposed to do this by picking winners from the good people and losers from the bad people. The government is supposed to control the way people do business, how businesses (and farmers) function and what they produce. And people should be made to cooperate with this control because they are part of society and society is dependent on everyone being in compliance. This is simply the Truth. It's how the world works and how the world is supposed to work. The Socialist Nationalism, ...

Tyranny.gov vs Tyranny.com

Compulsion is Compulsion, no matter who does it.  This is Brilliant Theft is Theft, no matter who does it. Freedom of Association has no room in it for *private* action   that takes that away Freedom of Association. If I have a business and have voluntary associations such that I choose to serve some people and to not serve others, that might make me a jerk and it might lose me business, it might make me smart and it might gain me business, but it's got to be my choice.  If I would normally serve the current disliked minority in my shop except for the fact that if I'm SEEN to serve them by the wrong people I'll have a private campaign against me as those people do everything possible to ruin me by preventing me from doing business physically or by attacking my customers or suppliers, then I am NOT free to make those choices. Does it really make a difference to losing my CHOICE to voluntarily associate if there's a law that says I may not serve "those people" o...
